Per the desire of our Adult Bible Study class we have made a liturgy for Emergency Baptism readily available via this blog post. Bookmark this page in your browser or on your device’s homescreen for quick access.
In urgent situations, in the absence of the pastor, any Christian may administer Holy Baptism. If time permits this liturgy should be followed, but if not, then the application of water with the words of Christ, “In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” is sufficient for a valid Christian Baptism.
Holy Baptism
In Cases of Emergency
Jesus said, “Assuredly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on them, and blessed them. (Mar. 10:15-16)
Let us pray. Eternal God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, give name(s) your grace though rebirth by the Holy Spirit. Receive him/her/them according to your promise: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you,” that through this heavenly washing he/she/they may receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and the forgiveness of his/her/their sins and come to the eternal kingdom which you have prepared for him/her/them; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Mat. 7:7)
Lord’s Prayer
Apostle’s Creed
Take water, call the recipient by name, and pour or sprinkle the water on the head of the candidate while saying:
Name, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Mat. 28:19)
Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God and Father, we thank and praise you that you graciously preserve and enlarge your family and have granted name(s) the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him/her/them a member/members of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir/heirs of your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore you that, as he/she/they has/have become your child/children, you keep him/her/them in his/her/their baptismal grace, that according to your good pleasure he/she/they may faithfully remain in your kingdom to the praise and honor of your holy name and finally, with all your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
May the love of God, the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all. Amen.
The pastor should be notified as soon as possible after the Baptism has been administered.
